INTERCHANGING PLAYERS

One of the difficulties in any team sport is to ensure that each player gets an equal amount of game time.  Coaches and Managers sometimes tend to use their most talented players for most of the game and use their less talented players as their Interchange.  They lose sight of the fact that all players pay the same in fees and deserve to get equal game time.

Some lose track of the time and unintentionally leave the better players on the field for too long.  As a former Coach & Manager, I designed a spreadsheet that broke the game down in time blocks and used this as a basis of getting players on and off the field.  A template of this spreadsheet is provided that you are most welcome to download and use.

The game goes for 20 minutes each half or 40 minutes overall.  With a maximum of 8 players on the field, the total game time played by all players is 320 minutes.  Divide that by the number of players and you have the amount of game time that each player should play.  The ideal number of players (from an interchange point of view) is 10.  This gives each player 32 minutes of playing time.  If you have 9 players, one of those ends up playing the full game.  With 11, three players get 32 minutes, eight get 28.  With 12, four get 28 minutes and eight get 26.  Rotate your players each week to give each player the opportunity to improve their playing skills.

The best time to interchange is when you have possession of the ball or just after a try is scored and you should limit your interchanges to one or two players at a time.

PLAYERS NAME & NUMBER - Game Score Card

Before any game commences, players are meant to write their name & number on the Game Score Card.  This delays the start of the game as there is only 3 minutes in between games for the referee to get to the field and pass the card to the Manager for completion.  An A4 sized template in Excel can be downloaded and used to ensure we record the participants in each game.  Simply type your Team name, the Players Name & Number in the pre-formatted  boxes and print.  You can cut out each label and, using a glue stick, stick this to the Game Score Card before the start of play.  A sample of two teams is included in this Workbook.
