Cronulla-Sutherland District Rugby Football League Referees' Association

Congratulations to Jared Maxwell who referrred the City Country Game on Friday the 7th May.

Cronulla-Sutherland District Rugby Football League Referees' Association Incorporated was formed in 1963 and officiates in games ranging from Under 6's to A Grade in the Sutherland Shire District, Sydney NSW, Australia.  We are affiliated with the New South Wales Rugby Football League Referees' Association.

There are 16 clubs and 291 teams playing within the Shire in three Divisions; Mini League for 6 to 8 year olds, Modified League for 9 to 12 year olds and International Rules for 13 year olds to A grade.

Our members are committed to providing a high standard of refereeing as well as ensuring the safety of all players.

Referees in all sports are an integral part of ensuring that players play the game in the true spirit by following the rules as set down by each game's ruling body. Without a referee or umpire, chaos would rule.  A good referee has an excellent understanding of the rules of the game, a firm and decisive manner and the respect of players and spectators alike.

We welcome and actively recruit new members.  We welcome anyone, male or female, who wants to make the commitment required to become a regular member of our team.  Age is no barrier.  We have a current referee that joined when he turned 51 and is still going strong in his 7th year of refereeing.  He claims that he will keep refereeing until he turns 75 or when his legs give out, whichever comes first.

Initial training involves a program spread over 4 - 6 weeks with the main emphasis on the rules.  The course is generally run on a Thursday night from 6:30 to 9:30pm and each trainee is required to complete an examination prior to obtaining their Preliminary Referees ticket.

Once you have completed this part of your training, you are eligible to referee your first game of Mini Football and to continue with ongoing practical and theoretical training to achieve Level 1 status.  Please note that any new applications will not be processed until the end of the current season.

As well as providing excellent training and coaching for prospective Referees, new members can expect strong support and guidance from Senior Referees.  Some of our members have progressed through the ranks to refereeing NRL First Grade fixtures like Jared Maxwell who refereed nearly every round since 2007.  Adam Cassidy was graded into the NRL ranks in 2009.  We also have one current member in the Junior Representative Referees Squad; Faye Breslin who also is our Association's Social Committee Secretary.

We have practical on field training on Wednesday nights.  We are fortunate to have Jared Maxwell as our Training Coordinator who helps us to improve our fitness levels and to work on our referring techniques.  On the forth Wednesday of each month we hold our General Meetings to discuss matters that arise from our games.  We also view video footage and discuss rulings and various scenarios that may occur during a game.

If you were to ask 10 referees why they decided to become a referee, you would probably get 10 completely different answers.  The majority however would agree that it was the 'F' factor that got them involved; FUN, FITNESS, FRIENDS and FUTURE.
