1. Get to the ground at least 15 to 30 minutes before the start of your game.
2. Check the field for any dangerous objects (glass, cans, sticks, stones, bottle tops etc.) This is part of a
referee's "Duty of Care" and is compulsory no matter if another referee checked it in an earlier game.
3. Familiarise yourself with the boundaries especially when your field shares a common tryline or sideline.
4. Make sure that both teams know which cones signify the trylines at each end of the field.
5. Check players equipment - No jewellery
- Correct Official Oztag shorts or Tights - no pockets in shorts
- Correct boots (no metal or screw in studs)
- Shirts numbered and tucked in
- Don't allow girls to tie their shirts in a knot behind them
- No sunglasses or caps with hard visors
6. Introduce yourself to the captains.
7. Give coin to one of the Captains to toss. Winning team picks direction to run, loosing team kicks off.
ATTITUDE & APPEARANCE
The attitude you referee with will reflect in your performance and rapport with players. A positive attitude during the game will be noticed and players will respect your input. Help players to understand the rules and explain to them what the penalty is for and why. Don't be arrogant, cranky, argumentative or aggressive.
REFEREE SCORE CARDS
Mark the tag colour next to each team and also mark which team kicked off. Call out the progressive score after every try is scored. It is easy to mark the wrong side of the score card especially when you are not familiar with the teams or players. By calling out the score players will quickly tell you if you've got it wrong. Get the captains to sign the card after the game to eliminate any disputes regarding the score.
ENDING THE GAME
Play out the last play. The ball must be deemed 'dead' or 'out of play' before you blow your whistle for half time or full time. If a 'tag' is made and the siren or hooter goes BEFORE a team plays the ball, then blow the whistle. All penalties must be played out.
